Mark 8:27-30
What’s in a name?

The name Jesus provokes emotion some 2000 years after his death and resurrection! Jesus asked two questions about his identity.

The question of who Jesus is today still demands an answer!

I. The inescapable question? v. 27-28

Caesarea was a pagan area devoted to pagan Gods and the worship of Cesar as God. So Jesus is asking who people say he is in the context of the surrounding culture.

Malichi 4:5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.

These answers reduce Jesus to less than he is!

II. The Only acceptable answer? v. 29-30

*Knowing that Jesus is savior and not just a prophet matters! A prophet can’t save you!

What you think about who Jesus is has no effect on who he actually is!

Sermon in a sentence: Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God!
