Trinity Week 1 Sermon Notes
God The Father

Galatians 4:4–7 (ESV)

"4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God."

Introduction: What is the Trinity?

1. A doctrine revealed across the whole of scripture

2. The nature of God-He is 3 distinct persons in 1 God

Deuteronomy 6:4 (ESV) 4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

3. Unexplainable-We are not going to try and explain the Trinity, but we are going to see the person and work of each member of the Trinity demonstrated through the act of salvation.

We will glory in the mystery of the Trinity!

Main Idea: Believers have access to the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit.

The truth of the person of God the Father is revealed by his...

I. Divine Power

God’s power is expressed through his…

                 a. Acts of creation

Gen. 1:1-God the Father created the universe through his spoken word.  The universe displays his power! Job 38:7 “when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”

  • Creation shows that God is not like us-he creates from nothing

  • Creation shows the beauty and order of God

  • Creation shows a personal God

Psalm 46:1  God is our refuge and strength,a very present help in trouble.

  • Creation shows God is in control of the beginning and the end

                  b. Acts of sovereignty

“the fullness of time”- an expression that connects this passage to the illustration of the heirs entering into his full inheritance at the father’s pre-appointed time.

II. Divine Plan

God’s plan is expressed through his…

                  a. Design for salvation

Next there is the announcement of God’s supernatural intervention in the mission of Jesus Christ.

                  b. Determination for salvation

III. Divine Promise

The Promise is fulfilled through

a. God’s sending of Jesus according to the scriptures

Genesis 3:15 "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Micah 5:2- “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”

The Promise is fulfilled through

b. God’s sacrifice of Jesus

John 3:16-Begotten-the word does not mean that God made Jesus, but that Jesus was God’s only unique son. Also, “son” doesn’t mean less important or powerful or the first like we may think of it.

God’s sending of Jesus was active because he suffered also when Christ died!

“Scripture indicates participation of all three members of the Trinity in the work of redemption. While it was definitely only the Son who became incarnate, suffered, died, and was resurrected, the Father sent his Son, giving him as the sacrifice for our sins (John 3:16; 1 John 4:10; Rom. 3:25). This was much like Abraham being called on to sacrifice Isaac (Gen. 22:1–19).” -Dr. Gerald Bray

Genesis 22:1–2 “After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

Main Idea: Believers have access to the Father, through the Son, by the HS.

So what does the trinity have to do with me?

Your salvation and mine would not even be possible without the actions of our trinue God who exists in 3 distinct persons who are 1.
