Mark 4:35-41

Read Mark 4:35-41

This passage teaches us that we can trust that Jesus is who he says he is and that he will never leave us or forsake us!

We trust Him because of his…

I. His Guidance v. 35-37

                  a. The setting-Jesus directs the disciples to go across to the other side of the sea of Galilee.

                  b. The Storm on the Lake

II. His Humanity v. 38a

                  a. Jesus was asleep. 100% God and 100% Human.

1 qualifier to his humanity…he never sinned.

                  b. His Humanity was necessary to be the spotless sacrifice for our sins

Illustration-The Court of two sisters/reservation-gave them my name and they let us in because of who we were…we get the privileges of the kingdom of God not because of who we are but because of what Christ has done!

III. His Authority v. 38b-39

                  a. The disciples woke Jesus up-They questioned whether he cared for them at all! We do the very same thing don’t we? They were questioning his authority? When we trust God in the storm instead of doubting we acknowledge his authority!

                  b. Calmed the storm!

OT describes God as the Lord of all creation!

Psalm 104:7 reads, “at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight.”

Jesus has authority over nature because he is GOD!

IV. His Assurance v. 40

Jesus now turns from addressing the storm to addressing the disciples. He expresses a mild rebuke: “Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith?” Jesus rebukes the disciples many times for their lack of faith. But we on this side of the resurrection don’t have an excuse!

We know He rose from the dead. We know He can be trusted no matter what!

V. His Identity v. 41

Then the disciples are filled with great fear realizing just for a moment who Jesus really is! He is Lord! We must all confront this reality…who is Jesus to us? Do we trust Him with our lives?

It’s easy to trust Jesus with things are going great! But do we trust him in the storms of life!

Sermon in a Sentence: God won’t keep from the storm…but he will get you through it!

John 16:32–33 (ESV)

32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus wants to say peace be still in the storms of life! In our…families, careers, finances, relationships, griefs, sorrows, pain, suffering, addictions and hurts and to death itself he says peace be still…in all the storms of life he says peace be still.

When peace like a river attended my soul, when sorrows as sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say it is well, it is well, with my soul!
