Sermon in a Sentence: Jesus came to save sinners who then obediently follow him out of gratitude and thankfulness.

 Jesus was on a mission to seek and save.

I. The Mission is Revealing v.14-24

                  a. Reveals Who Jesus is 

                  b. Reveals the messiness of Sin 17-20

II. The Mission is Risky v. 25-29

                  a. We may suffer for the mission

The martyrdom of John is the only episode in Mark’s gospel that does not directly concern Jesus. It does, however, pick up the important Markan theme of the suffering role of the followers of Christ, who must take up their crosses and follow him (8:34). As a model disciple, John the Baptist gives his life for the gospel 

                  b. Cheap vs. Costly Grace​

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

 

III. The Mission is the Reason v.14-29

         

Sermon in a Sentence: Jesus came to save sinners who then obediently follow him out of gratitude and thankfulness.

 

We must count the cost of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. He is calling you into deeper faith and trust in him, will you obey that call?
